McBean, platform shooter game coming soon

A few months ago I was playing "Cool Beans," a shooting game prototype by Chad Chisholm, which you can still download using the wayback machine on the yoyogames sandbox. I've played the demo several times over the years. It's just fun to shoot different weapons at different kinds of beans. Unfortunately the game is very short and leaves you wanting more after clearing out all the enemies in the first & only level.

I realized that as a game developer I have the power to take the idea behind this Cool Beans prototype and create a full fledged game. So I drew some beans, and gave them walking animations, guns, and sunglasses. I've been working on the game on and off for about 4 months, and now it's almost done! I present to you, McBean:

The final game has 5 levels, 7 different weapons, and a few secrets. I plan to release the game commercially on my itch.io page, but I haven't decided on the price yet. There is already an old demo with 2 levels on it that you can give a try for free.

McBean will be ready for release either sometime later this week, or possibly next week if there are any unforeseen difficulties.

In other news, for some reason I forgot to post on here about my 2 latest game releases. I released Bounce Buds, a 2 player volleyball game, last year in July. I also released a game called Voltage last year in October, a single player game with a zapping mechanic. I made voltage in 2 days.

Stay tuned for the McBean release!

new game projects and a screensaver

I haven't posted in quite a while, about 10 months. This is because I have been busy with real life dilemmas and work. However, I have been squeezing in a tiny bit of game dev work in my free time.

Firstly, in December of last year I participated in Ludum Dare 40. I made a game called Surplus Snakes, it's available for download on itch.io, or you can play the browser version on Newgrounds. The theme for LD40 was "The more you have, the worse it is," so I made a traditional-ish snake game where a new snake is birthed at your tail every time you eat a pellet.

In January this year I released a new screensaver which I have been tinkering with on and off for a long time. It randomizes the design it creates every 10 seconds or so, so you can get some interesting varieties. It's available for download on itch.io.

I've also recently been working on a 2 player volleyball game, which now has online 2 player functionality, thanks to YellowAfterlife. It's very close to being finished right now, I just have to decide on a title and finish up some small details.

Customizable headwear and hairstyle, woohoo!

Earlier this month I also began working on another game, temporarily titled clumpheads. The game has both a single player mode and a 2 player mode. In some respects it's a typical platformer, but the levels are randomly generated and there are items which can be picked up and used in a similar fashion to Spelunky.

It takes quite a bit of verve for me to keep up all these different hobbies and projects, which is why I haven't spent much time writing on this blog for the last several months. Anyway, keep an eye out for the volleyball game, because I should be releasing it very soon. Thanks for reading!

Gebub's Adventure greenlit + release date

Gebub's Adventure has finally been greenlit on Steam and is scheduled to be released August 16, less than two weeks away!

I am aware that No Man's Sky is also coming out this month, on the 9th... it's unfortunate that our release dates had to be so close, but there's no way I can avoid it. On the kickstarter for my game, the estimated release date I set was August this year, and I'm glad that I have been able to finish the game on time.

I'm very excited to finally release Gebub's Adventure, and I hope all of you will enjoy the game when it is released! Make sure to mark your calendar! :)

Gebub's Adventure - Beta coming soon

Hello, everyone.
I know I haven't posted much since the successful Kickstarter for Gebub's Adventure. This is because I have been busy working on the game. Those of you who backed the project will have received an update earlier this month on the 16th regarding the game's credits. I am using backers' kickstarter(.com) usernames and I want you guys to contact me if you'd rather use a different name(perhaps your real name). If you are someone who has backed the project and missed this, please read the Kickstarter update here to see about finding your name in the credits. The update also includes info on how to contact me if you'd like to change your credited name.

Marius, the composer for Gebub's Adventure, has also been making a lot of progress on music and sound for the different areas. Everything is coming together nicely and it feels really good to be this close to finishing. I'm trying to get a beta ready soon, but there are still just a few things I need to polish and finish up first! It should be ready within 2 weeks, earlier than that if things go well!

Hope you enjoyed this progress update! :)

Gebub's Adventure Successfully Kickstarted!

On May 5th, 3 days ago, 131 extremely generous backers pushed the Kickstarter for Gebub's Adventure all the way to it's funding goal! It was a real nail-biter, with 64% of the goal being raised in the final 5 days of the campaign. In the end, we raised just $16 over the goal.

I am thankful to everyone who backed the project, and everyone who helped spread the word(be it on social media or elsewhere)! Gebub's Adventure still has a long way to go, but having a successful Kickstarter campaign is a great motivator and I will be doing my best to finish the game, and finish it well.

I will keep you guys updated as the game continues to progress. Also, have a happy Mother's Day :)

Gebub's Adventure - First day on Kickstarter

Things are going well for Gebub on Kickstarter!
As I am typing this the game has already reached over 10% of it's funding goal. Many of my friends & followers have been backing the game and helping me to promote it on twitter, I feel extremely fortunate to have such dedicated supporters.

The greenlight campaign(Steam) for Gebub's Adventure was launched quite a while back, in early February, to be precise, but it ended up getting stuck in greenlight limbo, so I decided it would be a good idea to re-launch using the new trailer & new content that I have been working on. The previous greenlight trailer was recorded back when the game was only 30 FPS, so I'm hopeful that things will go better now that everything is in smooth 60 FPS. You can check out the new greenlight page right here!

On the Kickstarter, I posted an update today showing one of the doodles in my notebook for gebub's adventure, and how it turned out looking in the game itself, have a look:

It's really beneficial for me to look back at my early plans for the game, a lot of ideas were scrapped, but these older scribblings can still inspire new ideas to appear in my brain.

i made a screensaver

A few days ago jwaaaap and Kitty Calis hosted the #screensaverjam on itch.io. I was very eager to participate.

I made a very colorful screensaver, using surfaces to achieve some interesting effects.

My screensaver was even linked to on the rockpapershotgun post about the jam. They said about it: "These colours hurt my eyes in pleasant ways."
You can download my screensaver, named "Screen Flavor" right now on itch.io!

In other news, my latest actual game project, Gebub's Adventure is progressing very well. There are about 12 unique environments & areas so far. The latest additions to the game world are the winter mountains.

I am considering putting Gebub's Adventure on Steam Greenlight. Might have a trailer up in a week or 2. Stay tuned! :)

new game release: Snake Snafu!

After a few setbacks Snake Snafu has finally been released. Actually I uploaded it to itch.io last month but never got around to making an official post here.

Snake Snafu is a two player(actually, up to 3 players) game where you try to survive longer than your opponent and/or cause them to crash their snake's head into a wall or your own snake body. There's lots of different levels, powerups, and game elements so I hope you will all enjoy the game.
This game also features online two player, thanks to YellowAfterlife.(single player mode is included as well, but it may feel a bit empty/boring).

Anyway, make sure to download and give it a go, on itch.io!

New game release: Pew Pew Heads

Over the last weekend Game Jolt held a 72 hour game jam called #indiesvsgamers where the theme of the competition was "arcade", the prize being that the top 5 games would be played by 3 prominent youtubers, Pewdiepie, Markiplier, and JackSepticEye.

I participated in the jam and created an arcade action shooter called Pew Pew Heads.

I had a lot of fun making this game. I opted for the scribbly MS paint graphical style in an attempt to make progress faster. Also keep in mind that all the games created for this jam have GameJolt highscores! So you can compete for a high ranking on my game's highscore hall of fame! :)

You can download & play the game on Game Jolt! And if you want to help me do well in the competition, give me a good rating on the judging section of my game's page! :)

Thanks, everyone!
